Indie music, underrated?

Majority of the music composers, bands, instrumentalists and even non musicians creates music or songs through their creative minds. some of them made it to the mainstream but mostly heard only in the bedroom, in front of the family and friends or played in a free gig. But hey, I think everyone started with the same idea of sharing your songs to the people that you know before anybody else… right?

I remember when my parents bought our first piano, I never stopped playing it like there’s no tomorrow. Even our neighbors knocked on our door at night just to ask me to stop cause they are disturbed while asleep. For the first few months I was so inspired and the ideas just keep flowing that I never stop creating songs, same thing for my brothers they have so much opportunity to create and express their ideas by playing the piano. We had a few moments that we got to perform our own music in front of our friends and relatives and the good thing about it is getting the response, comments and suggestion to improve our music plus to enhance our skills.

Another experience I had was on the cruise ship when a guest approached me to ask if I can play his composition He made while cruising. He said “play how ever you want, it’s up to you how you feel about my creation”. A classic example of creating a music then you can hear your music played for free. Nevertheless we played it and another satisfied guest went off the ship with a smile. In my opinion a musician to another musician speaks the same language in terms of music.

An Indie victory + A global trend

When the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis hit “Thrift Shop” clambered its way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, it marked the first No. 1 since 1994 not backed by a major label (that’s almost two decades!). According to Nielsen SoundScan, indie labels held 25.8 percent of the music business in 2007, behind Universal Music Group, which held a 28.8 percent stake. By June of 2013, however, the indies had pulled ahead, claiming an impressive 34.5 percent.

Some of the factors playing into this global trend include the fact that names like Jack White, Adele, Gotye and even Taylor Swift are all signed to indie labels and therefore play into these stats. Plus, when entering this sphere, you’ll commonly hear people accurately pointing out that many independent artists partner with the majors for distribution and marketing. (Source: Pledgemusic)

Well, being an indie artist wasn’t so bad at all and sometimes even better it’s just underrated. Somehow we started humble by being at the bottom of the chart. It doesn’t matter if your music is suitable for everyone but one thing for sure someone on earth appreciates your creation. It’s good to have people on your side to listen and give their opinion, till you reach your goal to be there on top of the chart someday. For me it’s all about the people who cares, appreciate and believes in you and your talent. Who knows you’re the next big thing.
